Investigators identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, a teacher, video game developer, and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) graduate. Officials said Allen was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he rushed the security perimeter, setting off an immediate law enforcement response.
Secret Service agents intercepted the suspect inside the hotel lobby before he could reach the crowded ballroom. A violent struggle followed, during which gunfire erupted. One Secret Service agent was struck at close range, but officials said the agent’s ballistic vest prevented fatal injuries. The wounded officer was transported to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Allen sustained minor injuries before being taken into federal custody.
